Guide · Westmoreland County, PA
That old TV in the basement can't just go out with the trash in Pennsylvania. Here are your real options in Westmoreland County, what each one costs, and when it makes more sense to have it hauled.
No. Pennsylvania's Covered Device Recycling Act (Act 108 of 2010) covers TVs, computers, monitors, laptops, and computer peripherals, and those items have to be recycled instead of going out with regular household trash. That applies to flat screens as well as old tube TVs.
That is why a TV left at the curb often just sits there. Your trash hauler is not supposed to take it with the regular pickup.
You have four realistic choices: drop it at the county recycling center yourself, bring it to a community collection event, schedule a pickup through your trash hauler if they offer one, or have a junk removal company carry it out and haul it. Which one fits depends on the TV and on your time.
Your Four Options
Westmoreland Cleanways Recycling Center, 355 Pleasant Unity Mutual Road, Greensburg, PA 15601. Takes all types of TVs. As posted on its website in November 2026, whole TVs are free to drop off. Public drop-off runs a few days a week, so check current hours on the Westmoreland Cleanways website before you load up.
Some townships and community groups hold electronics collections, often in the spring and fall. Dates, locations, and any fees change, so check your municipality's website or newsletter.
In some municipalities, your trash hauler will pick up electronics if you schedule it ahead. Extra fees may apply. Call your hauler and ask before you set the TV out.
We carry it out from wherever it sits and take it to be recycled properly. This makes the most sense for heavy tube or console TVs, TVs in basements or upstairs, or when you have other junk going too. A small fee may apply for electronics.
Dropping off a whole TV at the Westmoreland Cleanways Recycling Center is free, according to its website as of November 2026. Community collection events vary, and some trash haulers offer scheduled electronics pickup for an extra fee. Having a junk removal company carry it out and haul it usually costs something because the TV still has to be recycled properly.
If you have a truck, a free afternoon, and a TV you can lift, the recycling center is the cheapest route. We will tell you that straight.
No. Old tube (CRT) TVs and monitors contain leaded glass, and breaking one open creates a mess you do not want in your house or yard. The county recycling center also charges a $25 unsafe handling fee for smashed or disassembled CRTs, according to its website. Move it whole or have it hauled whole.
When the TV is the hard part. Big tube TVs and wood console sets are heavy and awkward, and they tend to end up at the bottom of basement stairs, in a back bedroom, or buried in a garage. If moving it takes two people, a truck, and a trip during drop-off hours, hauling is usually worth it.
It also makes sense when the TV is one item in a bigger cleanout. If the basement is full, we price the whole load from your photos, TV included.

The same state law covers computers, monitors, laptops, and computer peripherals like keyboards and printers, so those cannot go in the trash either. The county recycling center also takes many electronics the law does not require, like cell phones, stereos, and gaming consoles. We take all of it as part of a junk removal job.
